We had a great start to the new school year and we are looking forward to a wonderful year!
On the first day of school we read the poem The First Day of School by Maria Fleming. As we read we talked about how the author feels on the first day of school. We made connections to our own feelings. We talked about how we all have different feelings: excited, nervous, scared etc. In the beginning of the poem the author has butterflies and worries about the first day of school. However, by the end the author feels more comfortable after getting a wink from the teacher, a smile from a little boy and makes new friends. As a follow up to this poem each student was given a butterfly. They had to find their match and partner up. Together the partners talked about things that they like. Anything they had in common was put onto their own paper butterfly. Another important story we read this first week was Have You Filled a Bucket Today. This story is one we will refer to every day throughout the year. It teaches how we each have the opportunity to fill each other's invisible buckets through kindness. Students wrote about a way that they can be a bucket filler. Students also started earning Brag Tags and these will come home next Friday on their backpacks for you to see.
