We have read lots of nonfiction texts about the journey and experience of the Pilgrims. On Monday, the students wrote an informative how to piece about growing crops after reading about how Squanto taught the Pilgrims his method for growing corn. We used Oreo cookies for the dirt, candy corn for the seeds, and Swedish fish to represent the dead, rotting fish to make our own version. They LOVED it. They did an outstanding job writing their pieces. I was truly impressed with the use of the transition words, improved neatness in handwriting, the use of capital letters and end punctuation. Students also created their own All About the Pilgrims book and the room was buzzing with excitement as they recalled all the fun facts they have learned during the past couple of weeks.
In small groups, we have been working on reading words with ending blends. In our leveled readers, we have focused on answering comprehension questions using text evidence. This is a challenge for them, but they are doing a great job.
We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. We are so thankful that you share your children with us each day!
