All this week we have been reading and learning about what life was like long ago. We started this unit learning about the pilgrim's long voyage on the Mayflower. Next, we spent the week reading books comparing transportation, schools, homes and children from long ago to today. After reading the book Pilgrim Children the boys were put into small groups to show how pilgrim boys were the same and different from a boy's life today. The girls used a venn diagram to compare and contrast pilgrim girls to girls today. To culminate our unit we celebrated pilgrim day. The student made pilgrim hats and rotated through five centers to simulate what life was like long ago. Center 1- This group created log cabins out of lincoln logs. While in this center they also noticed teepees, horse and carriages, canoes, and other models of what life was like in the past. Center 2- This group made their own toy. The students stuffed a sock and used their imagination to decorate it and make it into something special. Center 3- The students in this center learned how to play a game of marbles. They had a great time!! Center 4- In this center the students got to see what it was like to write with a quill and ink. The students made a hornbook and then used a feather and paint to write. They did a great job! Center 5- Long ago the pilgrims did not have grocery stores. The students went hunting and gathering around the school looking for food. The girls collected corn, wheat and berries. The boys went hunting for deer and fishing for fish and mussels. This week in math was the perfect time to teach the class about timelines. Each student created a timeline to represent past events and their present life.

After our Halloween music performance we went back to the room for our party. The students enjoyed a fruit cup, fruit snack and a cupcake. They each made a pumpkin / mummy bookmark and played pumpkin bowling. Thank you to all of our parent helpers! |
