Arrr! Today we learned about the bossy sound ar. We couldn't resist making it memorable with a pirate them. I read the story The Pirate Who Couldn't Say Arrr! The students made a pirate hat and I provided them with a treasure box and an eye patch. We looked for "treasure" around the school. I hung ar word cards with a piece of gold attached (Rollo) in the hallways throughout the building. Each student had a turn at the front of the line as the head pirate. When the treasure was spotted we said "ar!" Each student got a piece of "gold" to put in their treasure chests. They then practiced reading their own ar word cards that we are keeping in their treasure chests all week as we continue to learn about bossy r. We also read a nonfiction selection about the real pirate Blackbeard. We practiced writing a few ar words (which they wrote on gold coins and put on their paper treasure chests). We also read a simple book with many ar words. Needless to say they were excited and they all wanted their picture taken for the blog so I hope you enjoy seeing the many pirate faces and poses! I think they will remember the sound of ar and hope they had a fun day!

It is great to be back! I've missed the energy and fun that can only be found in a first grade classroom! This week we started working with 3 dimensional shapes. Students have learned to identify the faces (number and shape), vertices, and edges of the shapes. Students have a flip book where we have pictures of each shape and they have highlighted the edges and vertices. We have explored and learned using 3D shape manipulatives and built our own with toothpicks (the edges) and marshmallows (the vertices). As always, it's so rewarding to see them all so engaged in their learning! Please continue to point out these shapes in every day life as you notice them. I hope you enjoy looking at a few pictures of them building and learning in action:) Thanks, Mrs. Trujillo |
