![]() To kick off our new unit in science, we decided to go through the steps of the scientific method as we investigated physical properties of objects when trying to grow crystals. The students were so excited that we were able to take our ordinary pipe cleaners and turn them into sparkly snowflakes. We described the physical properties of the pipe cleaner before (tan, long, skinny, soft, point ends, etc) and then we described it again after we grew the crystals (snowflake shape, sparkly, white & tan, hard, etc). During the next couple of weeks we will learn about the physical properties of ob

![]() Well, after three extra days off due to the bitter cold, this assignment was the perfect fit for our first day back. After seeing examples of snow globes, I asked students to imagine that they were trapped inside one. We tried to imagine what it would be like and what we would hope to do. Then students had to decide if they would or would not like to be trapped inside a snow globe (opinion writing is a first grade common core standard). They brainstormed four things they would do or reasons why/why not. Then each child wrote an opinion piece with an opening sentence, details to support their opinion, and a closing sentence. They were encouraged to use transition words like first, next, then, and finally. Then we created a snow globe with them trapped inside. I took their pictures in their winter gear. They were allowed to pose as if they were stuck inside the snow globe. Some were shivering, throwing a snowball, making a snowman, or trying to get out. Very cute! We used construction paper, clear bowls, special snow, and our imaginations to make these adorable snow globes. They had a blast! A fun assignment to get back into the swing of things. |
