After reading the story the mitten the students identified the characters, setting, problem and solutions through writing or illustrations. We also reviewed what it means to summarize. To summarize means we are taking a snapshot of what we read. This is different from a retelling. We learned 5 key words to help us summarize: Somebody (the main character), Wanted (what did the character want), But (what is the problem), So (what did the character do to solve the problem), Then (how did the story end). Together we worked on writing a summary of the story The Mitten.
Finally, we discussed how a summary is different from a retelling. A summary is just a snap shot of a story. A retelling means you retell every detail and event in the story. The students were given puppet pieces to retell the story The Mitten.
