It's January. It's cold. Penguins and polar bears seem like a good fit! We love using themes to keep the students engaged. Our focus has been on applying our four reading comprehension strategies: asking questions, making predictions, summarizing, and clarifying while reading both nonfiction and fiction books with these adorable animals. The students have done a lot of reading about penguins and polar bears and we will continue next week as well. Why stop a good thing? We have done read alouds, shared reading, partner reading, and guided reading. The students wrote an informative piece about penguins. This week we started the five step writing process for our very first stories. We will continue this process next week and they are very excited! In phonics, we have continued to focus on magic e. In math we are nearing the end of chapter 6. This week we worked with representing numbers with more than one model and started working with larger numbers. (Since we do this in small groups, some students are working with numbers from 100-110 and some who have mastered this are working with much larger numbers).
