Kids long ago could not go to a store to get toys. They would make their own toys. The students made their own doll out of a sock, stuffing, rubber bands and markers. Of course long ago they would not use a sock to make their dolls. They would make rag dolls out of fabric.

Long ago children would write on a hornbook. The hornbook consisted of a wooden paddle with lessons tacked on and covered by a piece of transparent horn.
The wooden paddle was approximately 2 3/4" x 5" with an easy to hold handle. A hole was put in the handle so a leather thong could be tied to it and the child could carry it on his/her belt or around his/her neck.
Typically, the writing slate was used by children during the days of the one-room schoolhouse to practice writing and arithmetic during classes or at home.
Everyone wore something on their heads. Men and boys wore caps knitted of wool or hats made of felt. The felt hats had wide brims to shade their faces from the sun and keep them dry. Girls and women pinned their hair up on their heads. They wore linen caps called coifs over their hair. Over the caps, they too wore felt hats.
