We continued our work with bossy r this week. Students learned the sound of er, ir, and ur. We used a car theme to help us remember the sound (a car quickly stepping on the brakes). Students practiced reading er, ir, ur words and parked their car in the parking lot spot with the corresponding letters. They loved this activity! Students did a great job with their paragraphs about the reasons they are lucky. We are so proud of them. It is fantastic to see them writing complete paragraphs with a topic sentence and closing sentence in early March with such ease! We reviewed and took the chapter 9 assessment in math. We spent some of our instructional time in math working on answering extended response. Students wrote explanations for how they solved a two-digit number plus a two-digit number problem. I never dreamed I would be doing this with first graders, but they are doing so well! We will be doing lots of modeling with this in the next few weeks. Enjoy the pictures! Some of them were taken during our "brain break" and I couldn't resist taking a few pictures. It is so nice to see their friendships grow. It's also such an important piece of life in first grade:)
