We learned about magic e this week. It really takes a lot of concentration for many of them to identify now when the vowel is long or short. Hopefully, they are pointing out magic e words to you in their reading at home. We worked on solving word problems in math with a focus on using a bar model. We also focused on writing in math this week. This will be our focus for the remainder of the month in writer's workshop. We also are including a short burst of writing in math in our math rotations. Students chose an opinon piece from December and used their checklist to edit and then publish their piece.
Reading is thinking
* Ask your child to tell you about this story.
* Ask your child to show you the hand gestures we use when we want to practice each of the strategies: Predicting= crystal ball, Questioning= microphone, Clarifying= glasses,
Summarizing= camera
The students were partnered up to work on applying what we just learned in their own reading. Together with their partner they read a book of their choice. Before, during and after their reading they were encouraged to talk with their partner about their predictions, questions, clarifications, and summaries.
